Planting & Pruning
Planting can be done at anytime of the year if they have consistent water. Fruit trees tend to like free draining soil. Can be in a sunny or partly sunny spot. They also like a bit of a breeze. Plant the frame provided with the tree as this will provide support while training. The frames can be extended or replaced once the tree is in its established shape.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or not the thought of pruning can be daunting. We have provided a guide to help you with this. The age, variety, shape and growth rate will determine how much pruning has already been done in our nursery. The diagrams provided indicate where to prune in the event you have brought a tree where you will be required to prune.
HORIZONTAL CORDON
3 buds are required to grow on forming the main shape of the tree. A bud to grow onto the left, one on the right and a top leader to go straight up, which will be pruned in subsequent years to produce the next growth tier.
PALMETTO
2 buds per side are needed here with the two left and right laterals trained to follow your bamboo frame. Do this when the laterals are supple.
FANS, SERPENTINES & BELGIAN FENCES
No shape pruning is required with these shapes. The main leader merely being trained along the frame supplied.
Pruning is best done in the winter prior to growing season and preferable after the tree has been planted and become established. Any branches you wish to remove because they are interfering with the shape of your tree can be pruned at the 2nd or 3rd bud from the main branch; these will become fruiting spurs. For further advise on pruning we would suggest Karl Pieber and Peter Modi's book Espalier Fruit Trees.
